I have the opportunity to talk with people about their nutrition habits daily and while everyone seems to know what they shouldn't be eating, almost no one discusses foods that should be included in our daily diet.
Beans fall into the category of forgotten food, which is a shame because they’re a nutritional powerhouse. Beans are packed full of antioxidents, B-vitamins, potassium and fiber, along with complex carbohydrates and protein. They promote a healthy digestive system and have shown promise in the prevention of cancer, especially colon and breast. Additionally, beans go way back in time, having been a food staple for many ancient American civilizations (beans and a corn tortilla anyone?)
Knowing that entire civilizations relied on beans is enough to get me eating them, let alone all the aforementioned health benefits. I recommend including beans in your diet whether it be as a side dish, meat replacement, or flavor enhancer.
There are so many types of beans you shouldn't have a problem finding many different ways to incorporate them into your nutritional plans. Try starting with these varieties;
Black beans
Kidney beans (red and dark red)
Black eye peas (really they’re beans)
Great Northern
Navy
Pinto
Garbanzo
Lima
OH YEAH, beans are cheap too! Usually less than $1 per can. Check out my recipes page to find awesome and delicious ways to get beans into your belly!
